Gua Balai & Gua Tongkat, Taman Warisan Kota Gua Gelanggi

A journey to a place where it is mostly unknown and unfamiliar to one mind can be an upsetting challenge unless perseverance is maintained all the way to the end of a journey.

A humid Saturday afternoon on the Eid Adha did not deter my initial intention on visiting , if possible, little bit of caving  to a cave complex located in the heart of Jerantut. A complex that , as far as my limited knowledge is concern , fill with several stories behind the origin of the beautiful caves along with any remnant from past civilization that is believed to exist there.

Jerantut itself is a place of wonder.  I realized , as a constant seeker for historical and archaeological sites focused on West Coast of Malaysia, where the remnant from past civilization exist in a form of ruined buildings and artifacts, it is somehow  intrigued my mind, if not much,  to question the source of its origin, East Coast on the other hand is a wonderland of wild and sometimes untouchable greenery 'artifact', standing majestically and sometimes, intimidatingly in front of those who wish to explore its hidden mysteries. Most of the places that I stumbled upon were either closed for visitation or simply left unattended with wild shrubs with fallen trunks and dead leaves blocking any possible paths.

The cave complex was believed to be  a cluster of cities, with respect to the number of caves located within the area. According to Berita Harian article dated 8th Feb 2016, a total of seven (7) caves were found scattered within the cluster.

Open car park with a hill as its backdrop

The dirt that covered the notice board indicate it has been left unattended for a very long time
A wooden pathway that lead to what it seems a cafetaria
Thick bushes and trees along the wooden pathway
After the cafetaria a bit further to the front there is a road that will lead to the first cave named Gua Tongkat. The scenic and structure of the caves, with several pillars going down from the cave roof somehow contributed to the name. From afar it s more like a solemn gateway towards the unknown. Beautiful one, too.

Gua Tongkat
From afar it looked majestic and yet sombre, Gua Tongkat.

Towards second cave; Gua Balai

From the seven caves, I managed to visit only two of them; Gua Balai and Gua Tongkat. Opposite to its name, Gua Terang Bulan is too dark for me to venture down.

The cave is rather clean.. too clean

Gua Balai- Supposed to be water collection site or perhaps for discharging blood after beheading

Climb up- Did not manage to the top , too dark and the thought of snake is too much for me to handle.
